Frequency Conversion

Quick answer: 1 kHz = 1,000 Hz, 1 MHz = 1,000 kHz, 1 GHz = 1,000 MHz = 10⁹ Hz, 1 Hz = 60 per minute (60 BPM); European mains runs at 50 Hz.

Hertz, kilohertz, megahertz, gigahertz and terahertz, plus 1/min, 1/h and BPM – mains, signal and processor frequency.

How the calculation works

Enter a frequency and choose the unit. The table shows the same frequency from nHz to THz, in cycles per second and as repetitions per minute (BPM) and per hour. Revolutions (rpm) are under the separate “Rotational speed” type.

Formula and assumptions

The hertz is one cycle per second (1 Hz = 1/s). SI prefixes: kHz = 10³ Hz, MHz = 10⁶ Hz, GHz = 10⁹ Hz. Repetitions per minute are divided by 60: 1/min = 1/60 Hz; the period is T = 1/f.

More worked examples

  • Mains at 50 Hz: period 1/50 = 20 ms.
  • Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz = 2,400 MHz.
  • A pulse of 72 BPM = 1.2 Hz.
  • Radio at 98.5 MHz = 98,500 kHz.

Units of frequency

1 kHz1,0001 ms
1 MHz1,000,0001 µs
1 GHz10⁹1 ns

Common mistakes

  • Confusing mHz (millihertz) and MHz (megahertz).
  • Mixing frequency (Hz) with angular velocity (rad/s): ω = 2π·f.
  • Converting rpm to Hz without dividing by 60.

Frequently asked questions

How many Hz are in 1 kHz?

1 kHz = 1,000 Hz.

What is 60 BPM in hertz?

60 beats per minute = 1 Hz.

How do I get the period from the frequency?

T = 1/f: 50 Hz gives 0.02 s = 20 ms.

How many MHz are in 1 GHz?

1 GHz = 1,000 MHz = 10⁹ Hz.
