Electrical Resistance Conversion

Quick answer: 1 kΩ = 1,000 Ω, 1 MΩ = 1,000,000 Ω, 1 mΩ = 0.001 Ω; an insulation resistance of 500 MΩ = 0.5 GΩ and 4.7 kΩ = 4,700 Ω.

Ohms, milliohms, kilohms, megohms and gigaohms, plus the abohm and statohm – resistance of conductors, resistors and insulation.

How the calculation works

Enter a resistance and choose the unit. The table shows the same resistance in nΩ, µΩ, mΩ, Ω, kΩ, MΩ and GΩ, in V/A and in the CGS abohm and statohm.

Formula and assumptions

The base unit is the ohm (1 Ω = 1 V/A). By Ohm’s law R = V/I. SI prefixes: 1 kΩ = 10³ Ω, 1 MΩ = 10⁶ Ω, 1 mΩ = 10⁻³ Ω. CGS: 1 abΩ = 10⁻⁹ Ω, 1 statΩ ≈ 8.988 × 10¹¹ Ω.

More worked examples

  • A 4.7 kΩ resistor = 4,700 Ω.
  • An earthing resistance of 10 Ω = 0.01 kΩ.
  • Insulation of 200 MΩ = 0.2 GΩ.
  • A cable at 15 mΩ = 0.015 Ω.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing mΩ and MΩ.
  • Mixing resistance (Ω) with material resistivity (Ω·m, Ω·mm²/m).
  • Measuring resistance on a live circuit.

Frequently asked questions

How many ohms are in 1 kΩ?

1 kΩ = 1,000 Ω.

How many kΩ are in 1 MΩ?

1 MΩ = 1,000 kΩ = 1,000,000 Ω.

How do I calculate resistance from voltage and current?

R = V / I: 12 V at 0.5 A gives 24 Ω.

What is resistivity?

A material property in Ω·m or Ω·mm²/m (copper ≈ 0.0175 Ω·mm²/m); it is under “Electrical resistivity”.
